Weeds in a gravel driveway mostly come up from the soil below, not down from the top. Thin garden cloth tears under tires and angular stone. A weed barrier for gravel driveway use has to block light, pass water, and resist puncture.
At DOTDAY, that job belongs to XBAR, our 5 oz dual-layer fabric. This post is about weed control: stopping weeds on a new or existing drive, choosing the barrier, and keeping it working. To compare fabrics for a driveway build, see how to choose landscape fabric for a gravel driveway; for paths and patios, follow how to install landscape fabric under gravel paths and patios.
What the weed barrier must do under gravel
Under a gravel driveway the fabric has three jobs:
- Block light so weed seeds in the subgrade stay dark
- Separate gravel from soft soil so the base does not sink and mix
- Survive sharp stone, compaction, and tire load
A light woven sheet can block light for a season and still fail the other two. Dual-layer fabric is built for all three, which is why we steer driveway customers away from bed fabric.
Why dual-layer XBAR, not thin woven
XBAR is 5 oz: a woven polypropylene top bonded to a needle-punched non-woven backing. Grab tensile is 96 lb MD and 68 lb CD. CBR puncture is 332 lb (ASTM D6241). Thickness is 29.5 mil (ASTM D5199). Water flow is 10.5 gal/min/ft². It is UV-stabilized (70% strength retained after 500 hours, ASTM G154).
The woven face carries load and suppresses weeds. The felt-like backing adds bulk so angular gravel does not punch through. That is the difference between a driveway weed barrier and a flower-bed sheet.
Do not use non-woven TERRA as the only weed barrier under a residential gravel drive. TERRA is the filtration layer for drains and wall stone. Do not use SHIELD under vehicle gravel either; SHIELD is the mulched-bed fabric. See woven vs non-woven and geotextile vs landscape fabric for the build logic.

Weed barrier for gravel driveway: how to install it
- Excavate and compact the subgrade. Fix soft spots before fabric goes down.
- Roll XBAR flat, guide stripes up, and overlap seams at least 6 inches (more on soft ground).
- Pin seams and edges so wind and the first gravel pass cannot crawl the sheet.
- Place and compact the base gravel in lifts. Do not dump the whole pile on one spot from height.
- Finish with the surface gravel your driveway design calls for.
Size rolls with the Fabric Calculator, including overlap, and the base stone with the Gravel Calculator.
A real build: Okie Hauling's shop pad
Edgar Olmos and his crew at Okie Hauling put nine rolls of XBAR under a shop pad and a new gravel driveway in Oklahoma. The photos show the order that matters: fabric flat and overlapped first, then stone dumped onto it from the edge, then equipment working on top.

Edge drains and driveway fabric
Many gravel drives need a shallow drain along the low edge. Keep the products straight: XBAR under the driving surface for weed control and separation, TERRA wrapped around the drain stone so water can leave without pulling soil into the pipe. Mixing those jobs onto one roll is a common callback.
For drain wrap weight, use the thickness chart and the TERRA product page. For the weed barrier under the gravel itself, stay on XBAR.

What we recommend
For a weed barrier under a gravel driveway, we recommend XBAR, our 5 oz dual-layer fabric. Check the product page for sizes in stock. Trade crews covering long drives can request bulk pricing.
If the plan also needs a French drain along the edge, wrap that drain in TERRA, not XBAR. Two products, two jobs.
Keeping a gravel driveway weed-free
Fabric stops weeds from below. Seeds that blow in and sprout in dirt on top of the stone are a surface job. Rake out leaves and fines each season, top up thin spots so no fabric shows, and pull surface sprouts while they are small. On an existing drive, rake the gravel aside one section at a time, clear the weeds, lay XBAR with overlapped seams, and spread the stone back.
Common mistakes
- Using bed weed barrier under vehicle gravel
- Skipping overlap so weeds line the seam
- Leaving fabric uncovered between phases
- Mixing dirty fill into the gravel so fines choke the surface
- Treating driveway fabric and drain fabric as the same roll
Wrapping up
A gravel driveway weed barrier has to take stone and tires, not just shade the soil. At DOTDAY, XBAR 5 oz dual-layer is that roll. Pair it with a sound, compacted base, keep seams overlapped, and use TERRA only where water must filter through a drain along the edge.
