The problem

Heavy duty is a label on the roll, not a spec

Almost every landscape fabric on a shelf says heavy duty. Some are thin perforated film. Some are spun-bonded cloth that tears when you pull it. Some are honest woven polypropylene with the numbers to prove it. The label tells you nothing about whether the roll will survive your job, and the job is the only thing that matters: a bed under mulch asks for tensile strength and light blocking, a gravel path asks for puncture resistance too.

Two heavy duty landscape fabrics, one for each job

DOTDAY builds two woven weed barriers and publishes the numbers for both. SHIELD is a 3.2oz flat-tape woven with 180 lb grab tensile in the machine direction and 105 lb across, so a long run pulls tight over a bed or farm row without tearing. XBAR is a 5oz dual-layer: a woven top bonded to a needle-punched backing, with 332 lb CBR puncture resistance for gravel, pavers, and traffic. Heavy duty for a bed is SHIELD. Heavy duty under stone is XBAR.

Why weight alone does not make a landscape fabric heavy duty

SHIELD carries more grab tensile than XBAR at a lighter weight; XBAR carries far more puncture resistance. The numbers point to different jobs, not a winner.

Tensile strength: pull without tearing

A bed run is pulled tight, pinned, and planted through. SHIELD's flat-tape weave puts its strength in the plane of the sheet: 180 lb grab tensile along the roll, 105 lb across.

Puncture resistance: stone without holes

Gravel and pavers press points into the fabric. XBAR's needle-punched backing adds the bulk that takes them: 332 lb CBR puncture resistance behind a woven face that still blocks light.

    Clear and level
    Remove weeds, roots, and sharp debris. Under gravel, compact the subgrade so the fabric is not asked to bridge soft spots.

    Roll out, guide lines up
    Lay the fabric flat with the yellow 12-inch lines facing up. Cut clean with a knife; both fabrics have sealed edges that do not unravel.

    Overlap and pin
    Overlap seams 6 inches in beds and 6 to 12 inches under gravel, then staple seams and edges every 12 to 18 inches.

    Cover it
    Mulch, soil, or stone over the top, no exposed fabric. Covered fabric is what turns a good roll into a long-lived one.

What makes a landscape fabric heavy duty?

Construction and published numbers, not the label. A heavy duty landscape fabric is woven polypropylene, UV-stabilized, permeable to water and air, with grab tensile and, if it goes under stone, puncture resistance on a data sheet. SHIELD publishes 180/105 lb grab tensile; XBAR publishes 96/68 lb grab and 332 lb CBR puncture.

Which is the heavy duty option, 3.2oz or 5oz?

Both are, for different jobs. SHIELD 3.2oz is the heavy duty weed barrier for beds, mulch, farm rows, and nurseries, where the fabric is pulled and planted but never loaded. XBAR 5oz is the heavy duty option under gravel, pavers, patios, and driveways, where stone and traffic press on the fabric.

Is heavy duty landscape fabric the same as heavy duty weed barrier?

Yes. Landscape fabric, weed barrier, weed block, and weed cloth are all names for the same woven product bought for weed control. Under gravel and pavers the same fabric is also doing separation, which is why the heavier XBAR is the heavy duty weed barrier there and SHIELD is the pick in beds.

Can I use SHIELD 3.2oz under gravel?

For a light decorative border with rounded stone and no traffic it can work, but for paths, patios, pea gravel beds, and anything vehicles touch, use XBAR. Angular gravel and foot traffic puncture a 3oz weed barrier, and every puncture becomes a weed.

Do I need a heavy duty weed barrier in a vegetable garden?

Use woven SHIELD on paths and between perennial rows, planting through X-cuts, and keep it covered with mulch. In annual beds that are turned every season, fabric is more work than it saves, so most growers fabric the paths and rows, not the beds they dig.

How long does heavy duty landscape fabric last?

Kept covered with mulch or stone, a UV-stabilized woven fabric like SHIELD or XBAR lasts for many seasons. Exposed edges weather first, so tuck or cover them, overlap seams, and match the weight to the load on top.

Is non-woven fabric a heavy duty weed barrier?

No. Non-woven geotextile like TERRA is built for drainage and filtration: water passes through the felt and silt stays out. Weeds can root into it, so it is the wrong pick for a bed. Use it in French drains and behind retaining walls, and use woven SHIELD or XBAR for weed control.
