This is where fabric gets found out. Boulders swung off a Bobcat E40. Granite slab steps dropped into place. Crushed stone dumped from a bucket, then a plate compactor run over all of it. A fabric that survives Jeff's base work will survive anything a backyard does to it.

The felt-like needle-punched mat separates subgrade from base stone while letting water drain through its thickness. That keeps the base from pumping into the soil and keeps water from sitting under the hardscape. It is the same reason Jeff already used heavy non-wovens by habit.

Yes. 310.8 gallons per minute per square foot (ASTM D4491). Water passes through the body of the mat while soil fines stay put, so the base drains instead of silting.
