The problem

Why French drains clog and quit

A French drain only works as long as water can still reach the pipe. The fastest way to kill one is the wrong fabric. Woven weed barrier looks tough, but its tight, flat weave blinds over with silt and stops passing water within a season or two. Skip fabric entirely and soil fines wash straight into the gravel and pipe until the whole trench silts solid. Either way, you are digging it back up.

TERRA is a non-woven, needle-punched geotextile, thousands of fibers bonded into a thick felt with millions of tiny pore paths. Those pores are the difference. They are fine enough to hold back silt and soil fines, and open enough to let water pass through at a high rate, so the fabric filters and drains at the same time. That is exactly what a French drain needs, and exactly what flat woven fabric cannot do.

How TERRA goes into a French drain

    Dig and shape the trench
    Slope the trench to daylight or a sump, about 1 percent fall. Keep the walls clean so the fabric sits flat against soil.
  2. 2
    Line the trench with TERRA
    Roll TERRA down the walls and floor with enough width to wrap over the top later. Overlap seams by 12 inches or more.
  3. 3
    Add gravel and perforated pipe
    Set a gravel base, lay the perforated pipe, then top with washed drainage stone, all inside the fabric.
  4. 4
    Wrap, overlap, and backfill
    Fold the fabric over the stone so it fully wraps the core, then backfill. The wrap is what keeps soil out for good.

What fabric should I use in a French drain?

Use a non-woven, needle-punched geotextile like TERRA. It filters silt out of the water while letting water flow through, which is exactly what a drain needs. Woven weed barrier is the wrong choice because it clogs.

Why not use woven weed barrier in a French drain?

Woven fabric has a tight, flat weave built to block light, not to filter water. In a drain it blinds over with silt and stops passing water, so the trench backs up. Non-woven TERRA stays open and keeps draining.

Which TERRA weight do I need?

Use 4oz for shallow garden and yard drains, 6oz for standard residential and footing drains, and 8oz for deep, heavy-clay, or high-load drains and retaining walls. When in doubt, size up or ask us to spec it.

Do I wrap the gravel and pipe in the fabric?

Yes. Line the trench, build the gravel and perforated pipe inside the fabric, then fold it over the top so the core is fully wrapped. The wrap is what keeps soil out and the drain flowing.

How much overlap do I need on the seams?

Overlap seams by at least 12 inches so silt cannot sneak through the joint. On longer runs or unstable soil, use more overlap and pin the fabric so it does not shift during backfill.

Is TERRA the same as filter fabric or drainage fabric?

Yes. Non-woven needle-punched geotextile is what those terms describe. TERRA is built for filtration, separation, and drainage: French drains, footing drains, retaining walls, and road base.
