The problem

Why gravel disappears into the ground

Gravel is heavy, angular, and always moving a little under feet, wheelbarrows, and rain. On bare soil the stone works down and the soil pumps up until the two are one muddy layer, and you are topping up every spring. Light garden fabric does not fix it: sharp stone punctures it, the seams open, and weeds find the gaps. The fix is a fabric built for the load, laid on a compacted base.

Stone sinks.Without a separation layer, gravel migrates into the soil and the surface loses depth every season.
Soil pumps up.Wet subgrade squeezes fines up through the stone, turning a clean path into a muddy one.
Thin fabric tears.Angular gravel and foot traffic puncture 3oz bed fabric, and every hole is a weed.
Pea gravel wanders.Rounded pea gravel rolls; without edging and a stable base it spreads and thins out.

The fix

XBAR is the landscape fabric for pea gravel and gravel that carries the load

XBAR is a 5oz dual-layer fabric: a woven polypropylene top bonded to a non-woven needle-punched backing. The woven face carries the stone and blocks light, the backing adds bulk and puncture resistance, and the whole sheet still drains. That is why it goes under gravel paths, patios, pea gravel, and rock beds where a bed fabric gives out, while staying easy to cut, pin, and overlap by hand.

  • 332 lb CBR puncture resistance (ASTM D6241)
  • 96/68 lb grab tensile MD/CD (ASTM D4632)
  • Woven face blocks light, non-woven backing resists punctures
  • 12-inch guide lines woven in for straight runs and overlaps

Two layers, two jobs under the stone

One roll does what a separation fabric and a weed barrier would each do on their own.

Woven face carries the gravel

The tight flat-tape weave spreads point loads from angular stone and foot traffic, keeps the gravel from working down, and blocks the light weed seeds need.

Non-woven backing resists punctures

The needle-punched backing adds bulk under sharp stone, stops soil fines from pumping up, and keeps the sheet breathable so water drains instead of pooling.

Which gravel job are you building?

Pea gravel beds, paths and rock ground cover

Rounded pea gravel rolls and thins out on bare soil. XBAR holds it up, stops weeds coming through the stone, and drains. Add edging and 2 to 3 inches of pea gravel so it stays put.

Use XBAR 5oz

Gravel paths and walkways

Foot traffic, wheelbarrows, and edging. XBAR keeps the path level and weed-free with 3 or 4 ft rolls that match most widths.

Use XBAR 5oz

Gravel patios and seating areas

Furniture legs and daily use concentrate load. Lay XBAR on a compacted base, then 2 to 3 inches of stone for a patio that stays flat.

Use XBAR 5oz

Gravel driveways and parking

Vehicle load is a different case: base depth, compaction, and wider rolls matter. XBAR is still the fabric, and the driveway page covers the build.

See driveway fabric

Gravel under pavers or flagstone

XBAR goes below the compacted aggregate base, not under the sand bed, so the base cannot mix into the subsoil and pavers stay level.

Gravel in a drain trench

A French drain or dry well is a filtration job, not a load job. Use non-woven TERRA there so water passes and silt stays out.

How to lay landscape fabric under gravel

  1. 1
    Excavate and compact
Dig to your gravel depth plus a little, remove roots and organics, grade for runoff, and compact the subgrade so it does not pump.
  2. 2
Roll XBAR flat, guide lines up
Lay the fabric with the yellow 12-inch lines facing up and smooth out wrinkles. Cut clean around edging and obstacles.
  3. 3
Overlap 6 to 12 inches and pin
Overlap every seam, wider on patios and high-traffic paths, and staple seams and edges every 12 to 18 inches.
  4. 4
Set edging, then add stone in lifts
Install edging to hold gravel and pea gravel in place, then spread stone in layers and rake level. Keep the fabric fully covered.

“Absolutely love this weed barrier. It's durable, thicker, and a game changer for having to pull weeds. It doesn't shred like its competitors.”

Bri rolled XBAR 5oz along the chicken-coop perimeter and run, then spread gravel straight over it with the skid-steer. Daily bird and foot traffic, stone that stays put, and water that still drains through.

Landscape fabric for pea gravel and gravel, common questions

Which landscape fabric is best for pea gravel?

A woven fabric heavy enough to carry stone without tearing. XBAR 5oz dual-layer is the landscape fabric for pea gravel: it keeps the rounded stone from sinking into soil, blocks weeds, and drains. Because pea gravel rolls, pair the fabric with edging and 2 to 3 inches of stone so it stays in place.

How deep should pea gravel be over landscape fabric?

Two to three inches is the working range for a pea gravel bed, path, or patio: deep enough to cover the fabric completely and hide it under foot, shallow enough that the stone does not shift like a beach. Rake low spots as they show and keep the fabric out of the sun.

Do I need landscape fabric under gravel?

Yes, if you want the gravel to stay where you put it. Without a separation layer the stone sinks into the soil, fines pump up, and weeds come through within a few seasons. A fabric built for load, like XBAR, keeps stone and soil apart and blocks the light weeds need.

Which landscape fabric for a gravel patio?

XBAR 5oz dual-layer. A patio takes furniture legs and daily foot traffic, so the fabric needs puncture resistance a bed fabric does not have. Lay it on a compacted base, overlap seams toward 12 inches, and add 2 to 3 inches of compacted stone.

Can I use regular weed barrier under gravel?

A 3oz bed fabric like SHIELD is built for mulch, not stone. Under gravel it punctures at the sharp edges and the seams open, and every hole becomes a weed. Step up to XBAR for anything with gravel on top.

Woven or non-woven under gravel?

For paths, patios, pea gravel, and driveways, a woven face like XBAR gives separation, load spreading, and light blocking. Non-woven TERRA belongs where water is the job: French drains, dry wells, and filtration behind walls, not under decorative gravel that needs weeds held down.

How much gravel goes on top of the fabric?

Keep the fabric fully covered: about 2 to 3 inches of stone on paths, patios, and pea gravel beds, and a compacted base course plus surface stone on a driveway. Exposed fabric weathers in the sun and shows through thin spots, so top up low areas.

How much overlap do I need on a gravel path?

Overlap seams 6 to 12 inches, leaning toward 12 on patios and paths that take carts or heavy foot traffic. Pin seams and edges every 12 to 18 inches so nothing shifts while you spread stone. The Fabric Calculator adds overlap to the roll count for you.

Is this the same fabric as for a gravel driveway?

Yes, XBAR is the fabric for both. The difference is the build: a driveway needs a compacted subgrade, a deeper base course, and wider rolls to limit seams under wheel load. The driveway fabric page covers that case in detail.
