SHIELD, XBAR, TERRA the right fabric for the right ground condition

Choosing a Fabric

Which landscape fabric do I need for my project?

Start from the ground condition, not the spec sheet. SHIELD (3.2oz woven) is built for weed control under mulch, soil, and straw. XBAR (5oz dual-layer) is designed for gravel, pavers, and high traffic areas. TERRA (non-woven) handles drainage and filtration. The Fabric Finder quiz gets you to the right roll in under a minute.

What is the difference between woven and non-woven landscape fabric?

Woven fabric is strong and dimensionally stable, made for weed suppression and ground cover. Non-woven fabric is needle-punched, so water passes through freely, which makes it the choice for drainage and filtration. Full comparison: Woven vs Non-Woven Landscape Fabric.

Should I choose 3.2oz or 5oz fabric?

3.2oz SHIELD works best under mulch and soil in gardens, farms, and planting rows. Step up to 5oz XBAR when the fabric will sit under gravel, rock, or foot traffic. Full guide: Landscape Fabric Thickness Chart.

What fabric goes under a gravel driveway?

XBAR. Its woven top carries the load while the needle-punched backing resists punctures from angular stone. Full guide: Landscape Fabric for Driveways.

What fabric should I use in a French drain?

TERRA non-woven geotextile. It wraps the trench and lets water through while keeping soil out of the pipe and stone. Full guide: French Drain Fabric.

What do farms and nurseries use?

SHIELD 3.2oz woven is the standard for planting rows, container yards, and greenhouse floors. Full guides: Landscape Fabric for Farms and Landscape Fabric for Nurseries.

How much fabric do I need?

Measure the area, then add seam overlap and edge allowance. The Fabric Calculator does the math for you, including overlaps and roll sizes.

Installation

How do I prepare the ground before laying fabric?

Clear vegetation, pull existing weeds, and rake the area smooth so no sharp debris sits under the fabric. A clean, level base is most of the job. Step by step: Installation Guide.

How much should rows of fabric overlap?

Overlap seams by at least 6 inches so weeds cannot push through the gap between rows. On slopes or under gravel, extra overlap is cheap insurance. See the Installation Guide.

How do I secure landscape fabric?

Pin the perimeter and seams with landscape staples, working from one end so the fabric stays taut. The Installation Guide shows the pinning pattern.

Can I plant through landscape fabric?

Yes. Cut an X where each plant goes, fold the flaps under, and plant through the opening. This keeps coverage tight around the stem.

What goes on top of the fabric?

Cover it. Mulch, gravel, or rock protects the fabric from UV and holds it in place. Choose the fabric by what goes on top: SHIELD under mulch, XBAR under gravel and pavers.

How long does landscape fabric last?

Covered and installed correctly, a quality fabric lasts for years; UV exposure is what shortens its life. Full breakdown: What Landscape Fabric Lasts the Longest.
